Orthodoxies represent the combined work of generations, like languages or speciation. Bits and pieces of English have persisted since the Neolithic in words like mother, fire, and I. Humans and pine trees share a sliver of DNA, the building blocks of our most recent common ancestor. The most enduring orthodoxies retain elements of prehistory, passed down in myths and traditions. These components shift in utility the way traits do in species— through conferring survival benefit.
